How a Flywheel instructor crushes her morning routine

How a Flywheel instructor crushes her morning routine How a Flywheel instructor crushes her morning routine It is one thing to get up early, then get on a train or in a car and then go sit for the majority of your day at desk. It is quite another to get up and then grab on a spin bike and inspire a group of tired, overworked people to not only exercise vigorously, but also scream and shout and maybe even dance a little first thing in the morning. But that is what Flywheel instructor Emily Fayette does every day. And then she does that two more times on most days.   Fayette has been a Flywheel instructor for a few years and has just started teaching the popular exercise brand’s new class, Tempo. The new class combines interval and endurance training creating a very effective workout. “It is our most challenging ride yet and that’s what I love as an athlete. I love to constantly be challenged. With Tempo we are using the beat of the music and with all of the choreo [choreography] and getting your intervals in you are engaging all the muscles. Your whole body is basically being one with the music.”So how does she keep her energy up? Especially for those imperative morning classes? Well, if you think she is hooked up to an IV of coffee during class, you would be quite wrong. This is how a star Flywheel instructor does her morning routine. She tries to get a full 8 hours of sleepFayette is pretty religious about getting enough sleep so she is energized for the next day. “My routine is just to get a lot of sleep,” she says. However, she does often wake up from dreams with ideas in which case she gives herself time to think them out.She works out first thing when she wakes upFayette says she just does a simple five minute workout first thing when she wakes up and then hops in the shower. “I do about 10 basic moves for 30 seconds to get my blood flowing. I  treat that as my morning coffee.” That’s right folks. No coffee for this gal.She opts for matcha over coffeeFayette, who has a health blog called The Healthy Hustle, is on board the matcha train which con tains a  phytonutrient called l-theanine. It gives you energy, but a more calm one than straight coffee.  Vincent Pedre, M.D., author of  Happy Gut, said,  â€œThe result you get is a calm alertness, without the rush and crash of coffee. L-theanine is also a mood enhancer and improves concentration,” he says. Fayette told Ladders, “I’m  a little matcha obsessed so I put a scoop of that in my smoothie with berries or coconut water, so I get a little bit of protein.” She also opts for the green tea over coffee because she finds she immediately crashes after a cup of coffee which she doesn’t want when teaching. She doesn’t follow a dietThough you would think a spin instructor would have a strict diet, she just sticks with what will make her feel good. “I fuel my body with food that makes it feel good. So a lot of legumes and fresh fruits and vegetables. A burger and fries probably isn’t going to make me feel good later (but it will at the time!)”She takes dance breaksTo keep her energy up, she will take a few dance breaks. “My energy is the first thing the class fuels off of and I fuel off of them so it has to be high,” she said. She also usually runs 6 miles a day in between classes as well. “I want to be able to use my energy my positivity and help others find joy out of the class. It’s all about taking joyful risks.” She suggests  create a list of 10 things that make you happy, whether it is drinking coffee to listening to your favorite band, and every day do three of them.

DiscoverE Educator Awards Highlight Efforts of Three STEM Teachers

DiscoverE Educator Awards Highlight Efforts of Three STEM Teachers DiscoverE Educator Awards Highlight Efforts of Three STEM Teachers DiscoverE Educator Awards Highlight Efforts of Three STEM Teachers (Left to right) Daisy Rayela, Leon R. Grant III and Jill Johnson were recognized as the winners of the 2015 DiscoverE Educator Awards at a ceremony on June 8 at the National Academy of Sciences Building in Washington, D.C. Earlier this month, DiscoverE honored three pre-college teachers for their efforts to introduce young people to engineering. The three teachers Leon R. Grant III, Jill Johnson and Daisy Rayela were named as the winners of the 2015 DiscoverE Educator Awards. Eight other teachers were named runners-up in this year’s program. Eighty-five teachers were nominated this year for the DiscoverE Educator Awards program, which provides engineers with the opportunity to show their appreciation for the pre-college STEM educators who are encouraging young people to discover engineering. The three winners were recognized June 8 at a ceremony at the National Academy of Sciences Building in Washington, D.C. The winners each received a $2,000 cash prize and a gift pack of classroom supplies from 3M, while the eight runners-up each received $500 each and 3M gift packs. One of this year's three top winners, Leon Grant, is the founder of the Bridge-Gap STEM Mentoring Program and Society for Pre-Engineering at Marietta High School in Marietta, Ga. Grant has spearheaded a three-year project in which his students work with engineering students and professionals to research, engineer, design, and construct sustainable buildings for communities in Haiti, using repurposed shipping containers. Leon has inspired many of his students to continue on to study engineering in college and become successful engineering professionals. DiscoverE Educator Award-winner Jill Johnson started her career as an electrical engineer working as a research and development controls specialist. Feeling that women and minorities were underrepresented in the engineering field, however, she changed her career path. As a teacher at Johnson Aerospace and Engineering High School in St. Paul, Minn., Johnson provides new STEM learning opportunities to underserved students in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. She also established a STEM camp for middle school students and teaches a course, Bridging Engineering and Education, which trains educators how to introduce K-12 students to engineering. This years third winner, Daisy Rayela, believes that learning shouldnt be limited to the classroom. Before becoming the current STEM coordinator at Thomas Johnson Middle School in Lanham, Md., Rayela taught at Jose Panganiban National High School, where her science club was active in environmentally focused outreach programs within the community. Rayela started the Gateway to Technology program at her school to offer students problem solving, hands-on STEM based activities related to design and modeling, automation and robotics, energy and the environment. The eight runners-up in this years program are Ramatu Gariba of the South Municipal Education Directorate in Accra, Ghana; Rebekah Hammack of Stillwater Middle School in Stillwater, Okla.; Cary James of Bangor High School in Bangor, Maine; Richard Johnson of Rostrata Primary School in Whilletton, Australia; Katie Marchionna of Highland High School in Palmdale, Calif.; Aaron Tostado of Da Vinci Science High School in Hawthorne, Calif.; Jaime Trevino of the Foy H. Moody High School Innovation Academy from Corpus Christi, Texas; and Kate Youmans of the American International School of Utah in Salt Lake City. The DiscoverE Educator Awards are sponsored by 3M, Bechtel, ExxonMobil Corp., Lockheed Martin Corp., Shell Oil Corp., and the United Engineering Foundation (UEF). How to Declutter Your Office Space

How to Declutter Your Office Space How to Declutter Your Office Space To begin, put everything in, on or under your desk into three boxes: one for the stuff you need to do your job every day, one for the things you use occasionally and one for the things you don’t need. The first box you can keep, the second you should put in a cupboard or store room away from your desk, and everything in the third should be recycled, given away or thrown in the bin. So, now that you’ve done away with the worst of the office detritus, how can you ensure it doesn’t build up again? Pack up your paperwork. You may not be able to completely rid yourself completely of paperwork, but you can dramatically reduce the amount you create. Using email to share information and keeping staff handbooks and circulars on an intranet will mean fewer printouts hanging around your desk â€" and it will reduce your printer running costs. Clear away cables. Cordless phones and Wi-Fi enabled laptops not only get rid of untidy tangles of cables, they give you greater freedom to move around your office. So you can collaborate with others more easily and hotdesk if space is at a premium. Using portable devices such as laptops and tablets also enables staff to keep (and access via the web) much more information when working out of the office. For the cords you can’t get rid of, using zip ties can help keep them neat and tidy. Virtualise your presentations. If your business involves regular presentations, replace printouts and presentation boards and invest in a widescreen monitor or projector from office stores like Staples. It may seem like an expensive alternative initially but it will soon pay for itself, as well as reducing the amount of waste you produce. Similarly, rather than give handouts at the end of your presentation, simply store the Powerpoint document or PDFs on your intranet for people to refer to if needed. Digitize your archives. Keeping your records digitally makes it quicker and easier to retrieve documents and takes up a fraction of the space required by filing cabinets and cupboards. Computer servers and external hard drives can also be backed up online via Cloud storage for fast, efficient disaster recovery in the event of theft or damage. Take control of your Inbox.  Clutter can also take hold on your computer. Emails can clog up your inbox, using up storage space and making it difficult to keep on top of tasks. Rather than using your inbox as a to-do list, use the ‘Tasks’ option to record jobs and set reminders. File read or replied emails in folders relating to the task or client to make finding new or important messages easier. And use Cloud services like Evernote to keep notes where you can access them when you’re away from your computer. Office technology can make it easy to get organized and take control of your workload: you just need to seize the opportunity. Once you get into the habit of using these solutions, you’ll be more efficient, flexible and responsive and you’ll be able to take your business to the next level.

March 2019 Jobs Report

March 2019 Jobs Report March 2019 Jobs Report U.S. employers added 196,000 jobs in March, according to the latest jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). That figure is above analysts’ expectations and significantly higher than last month’s job gains, which the BLS revised up to 33,000 from 20,000. After revisions for both January and February, job growth has averaged 180,000 per month in the first quarter of 2019. The BLS reports that the following sectors created the most jobs in March: Education and health services: 70,000 jobs added Professional and business services: 37,000 jobs added Leisure and hospitality: 33,000 jobs added Construction: 16,000 jobs added Unemployment rate unchanged The unemployment rate held steady in March at 3.8 percent. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate for college-degreed workers who are 25 or older edged down to 2.0 percent from 2.2 percent the previous month. These workers are in highest demand by employers. Other data from the BLS help to underscore the challenge that many employers face in the current hiring environment, with historically low unemployment and a persistent lack of skilled talent available for hire. According to the latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover Summary (JOLTS), there were 7.6 million job openings in the United States at the end of January 2019. What employers need to know Employers must do many things - and well - to compete effectively for skilled professionals in this tight hiring market. That includes offering a standout compensation and benefits package, shining a light on your organizational culture, and moving as fast as possible in your hiring process. And then, once a top candidate agrees to join your company, you must do something else to ensure all of your hard work doesn’t go to waste: Offer an outstanding onboarding experience. In-demand professionals expect a lot more from the onboarding process than just getting an office tour, an employee handbook, and maybe a first-day lunch outing with their new boss and teammates. For example, they would like to: Arrive at the office to find their workspace and technology already set up for them. Discover that they have a mentor or sponsor to help them navigate their new workplace.   Learn more about how their contributions are going to make an impact at the company. Also, new employees definitely don’t want to spend their first day filling out paperwork. So, if possible, send routine paperwork to new hires in advance. A seamless, supportive onboarding process that extends well beyond day one helps set the right tone with new hires and sets them up for success. The experience that new employees have during their first days and weeks on the job is critical to helping them fit in and become productive fast. So, be sure to include a well-structured and high-touch onboarding process among the many things your organization does to engage top talent. START HIRING What job seekers need to know When you’re searching for a job, you can become so focused on getting your foot in the door that you don’t think about what might happen after you start a new job. Will you have a lot of support from the outset and feel like the business is invested in your success? Or will you be thrown into a sink-or-swim environment, without any sign of a flotation device?   First, never assume that a company will provide a comprehensive onboarding process that extends much beyond a first-day orientation. Yes, many leading employers are pulling out all the stops when onboarding workers - automating as much of the process as possible, offering extensive training on the company’s culture and values, ensuring new hires get ample one-on-one time with managers, and more. But many other businesses don’t do these things.   Don’t let your onboarding experience be a journey of total surprise. During the interview process, consider asking the hiring manager questions such as: Can you tell me about the company’s onboarding process? What does it entail, and how long does it last? What type of training or professional development opportunities will be available to me during my first few weeks and months on the job? How and when does the company typically measure a new employee’s performance? The answers you hear not only will reveal a lot about the company’s culture but also will help you decide if it’s the type of environment you’ll thrive in. It also stands to reason that if the company offers a thoughtful and extended onboarding process, it truly cares about seeing its new hires succeed.

Drinking the Desert Air

Drinking the Desert Air Drinking the Desert Air Drinking the Desert Air The iconic image of a desert traveler gasping for water is one we are all familiar with from books and movies, and the worlds deserts are truly some of the harshest environments known to humanity. For millions of people, however, this environment isnt a scene from a novel, its their everyday life, as scarcity of water impacts the health and well-being of many around the globe on a daily basis. Now, a team from MIT is out to solve this problem by pulling water out of thin air. The key to the solution? Relatively new materials called MOFs (metal-organic frameworks). Using metal organic frameworks, our goal is to harvest potable water actually out of the desert air, says Evelyn Wang, mechanical engineering professor at MIT. Her group used these materials in powder form as part of a proof-of-concept device they recently tested. [The device] is powered by sunlight and it uses these organic frameworks that consist of metallic clusters. They have organic linkers associated with them with a structure that can create three dimensional frameworks. This allows you to capture water molecules in the framework itself. For You: Military Looks to Renewables in Battle Zones The powder gets embedded in another porous matrix to allow enhancement of the [materials] transport characteristic to improve the performance in this composite matrix, Wang says. In laypersons terms, It sucks the water, acting like a sponge essentially, and draws the water into this composite layer. The device uses a technology called dewing, which harvests water molecules from the air. The device also contains an irrigation feature, which makes the water pumpable once it is collected from the air, and it can be used as a necessary source of heat within the device, she says. The sunlight releases the water molecules from the composite layer, which can then be condensed and turned into drinking water. These MOFs can work effectively and efficiently in environments where the humidity is as low as 20 percent, Wang says. A technology known as dewing is utilized and you need to get below the dew point and rely on a kind of refrigeration cycle, she says. That is a challenge when you get to lower humidity levels because it requires more energy to get to the dew point. Practically speaking, we believe our technology is one of the few - or the only one - that allows us to work in these regions. Because the device is powered by the sun, there is basically no additional electrical power needed, she says. With their current device being small, the team has only been able to extract a few milliliters at a time during testing in Arizona - where the water was also determined to be impurity-free. But they hope to change that by eventually scaling up. I would say a breakthrough will be when we are able to get as much as can fill a Coke can, Wang says. That will be a rewarding moment. There is much work left to do but the team is spurred on by the thought of so many living in desert environments who desperately need new, additional sources of clean water. It may seem strange taking water from the desert, she says. But its beautiful to think of what it can potentially do. Eric Butterman is an independent writer. How to Expand your Team as you Grow the Business

How to Expand your Team as you Grow the Business How to Expand your Team as you Grow the Business How to Expand your Team as you Grow the Business Conlan The numbers are there, and they cant be denied: It looks like its time for you to hire more employees. It turns out that small business growth is in the cards for many companies. While business growth is exciting, it also comes with risks, especially when it comes to increased headcount. Small businesses may not have a dedicated HR department or a dedicated HR person. That means already busy people will have to pitch in to help, says Diana Goodwin, founder and CEO of Toronto-based AquaMobile, a fast-growing on-demand at-home swim school business. This can mean having to work longer hours to fit everything into their busy day, or pausing on certain projects until the hiring is completed. Heres how to keep your business on track as you add staff. Take Stock of your Process and your People Before you make any major changes, carefully audit your existing staff and processes. Is everyone in their optimal role? Are they doing things in the most efficient way? Adding more workers when your hiring processes arent nailed down can sometimes do more harm than good. That was what business owner Deborah Sweeney found when she bought MyCorporation, a Calabasas, California-based business consulting firm. The company went through a pre-recession hiring boom that was ultimately ill-timed; once she took the reins, she had to let some people go. To avoid the same mistake, I made sure to look for the root of the problem, and found our sales process was too bloated to involve that many people, she says. No one knew who was working on which customer and orders got lost. Before you go through a hiring boom, Sweeney recommends taking a good, hard look at how things are done throughout your business and doing so early on. Make sure you understand how your workflow will be enhanced by adding more people. Once you get past one or two people per department, consider formalizing your hiring process, since more people almost always leads to more confusion. Determine Your Biggest Need Next, take time to figure out what type of new role will make the biggest impact on your business. Do you need more sales people, or does your existing team simply need an assistant to take on administrative tasks? Can your one-person marketing department handle messaging that sudden growth will require? Do these positions need to be full or part time? Depending on your business, there may not be a simple answer to this question, especially if business fluctuates throughout the year. We approach hiring very methodically, taking into account seasonal growth trends, says Shreyans Parekh, vice president of Fullerton, California-based Koyal Wholesale, which provides supplies for weddings and special events. If thats the case, consider creating a seasonal hiring strategy. Build a Recruiting Process That Scales When you let people know youre hiring, make sure your company values and mission come through in the job description. Dont waste your time on applicants who show no specific interest in joining your company, Goodwin says. You want people who are eager to embrace your mission and help the company grow, rather than someone whos just looking for a job. In addition, Goodwin recommends automating as much of the recruiting process as possible to save time. These include automated candidate messaging and social media outreach. Also consider usingcalendar apps that make it easy to schedule appointments. Finally, put in placea consistent interview process that can easily be replicated. Be Thorough in your Onboarding Orientation and onboarding are critical to the success of a new hire, says Allison Megalis, president of MCL Contracting Services, an HR consulting firm in the Chicago area. An established orientation and onboarding process to set them up for success. This will also boost employee retention and increase employee productivity. Set strong expectations with your new hire on their first day, says Michael Krasman, CEO and cofounder of Chicago-based UrbanBound, a relocation management software platform. Work with your new employee to lay out exactly what success looks like within the first 90 days. This gives them a benchmark for how well they are performing, says Krasman. These 90-day action plans can also give you a better idea of your employees skill set and provide direction on what areas to focus on in the future. Your current employees are experts on what it takes to succeed at your company. Matching new hires with employees in an informal buddy system can help them feel at home and get them up to speed on company culture and processes, while a more formal mentoring program will keep them accountable on their 90-day goals. No matter the type of program you use, increased collaboration and communication will help build a stronger team as you manage your growth.

Siegfried Marcus

Siegfried Marcus Siegfried Marcus Siegfried Marcus Who really invented the first automobile? It all depends on how you define words like automobile, first, and invent. But if the question is, who was the first to gear a combustion engine to a set of four wheels to make it go, the answer must be Austrian inventor Siegfried Marcus. Marcus finished his first car sometime between 1864 and 1870 some 15 years before the better-remembered efforts of Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler. His primordial design lacked numerous now-standard features such as brakes, steering, and seats, to name a few. But what it did have an internal combustion engine, a carburetor and four wheels would provide the basic DNA of gasoline-powered automobiles for the next 140 years and counting. Marcus made his mark as an inventor of electrical systems, telegraph equipment, and scientific instruments. Born in Germany in 1831, he was already working toward an engineering career by age 12. A machine-shop apprenticeship paved the way to a position in the telegraph industry, and his ideas for improved telegraphic relay systems earned wide international acclaim. He was also known for inventing the familiar T-handled plunger apparatus used to detonate explosives in mining and other applications. These breakthroughs gave him the financial wherewithal to build his own research laboratory in the 1860s. Self-propelled transportation was an intellectual rather than commercial enterprise for Marcus. He pursued his many areas of technological interest, including the use of liquid fuels for lighting applications. When he realized the explosive force that occurred when he used sparks to ignite an atomized petroleum-and-air mixture, he quickly realized the potential to harness that power to do work. His two-cycle internal combustion engine was born. Siegfried Marcus finished his first car some 15 years before the better-remembered efforts of Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler. Most inventors working on alternative engine designs and fuel sources in those days were focused on big established markets for steam power such as boat motors, pumps, factory machinery, and so forth. But Marcus took note of early steam cars and saw an opportunity for his engine. For his first attempt, he mounted the motor on a four-wheeled cart and connected it to the two back wheels. It had the ultimate manual transmission literally a hefty helper who lifted the back end up to hand-start the car by spinning a rear wheel. When ready to roll, the assistant lowered the car and off it went for a history-making 500 feet. Marcus would spend the next decade or more tinkering with his engine in his spare time. During this period he patented his ideas for a magneto ignition system, a rheostat, and other inventions. Marcuss next car, debuting in about 1888, was a quantum improvement over his first crude effort. Revolutionary features included a four-cycle, gasoline-powered engine, Marcuss novel carburetor design, and his magneto ignition. The car was said to reach a top speed of 10 mph. His later models were refined with steering, brakes, a clutch, and other features that simply hadnt been conceived of when Marcus first hitched his engine to a buggy. None of these later models still exists, but his landmark second car survives today and is owned by the Austrian Automobile Club the oldest gasoline-powered internal combustion car on the planet, as far as anyone knows. Marcus died in 1898. During his lifetime, he was widely considered (and formally honored as) the originator of the motorcar. But his place in history was all but erased during the German annexation of Austria in 1938. Because Marcus was a Jew, the Nazi propaganda office ordered his work to be destroyed, his name expunged from future textbooks, and his public memorials removed. They largely succeeded in writing him out of history. Exact dates for his key innovations are still difficult to nail down. But there is no obfuscating the fact that this ahead-of-his-time engineer and inventor built four progressively sophisticated combustion-engine cars over a 10-to-15-year span, and many of his inventions have found their way into the cars of today. Michael McRae is an independent writer. During his lifetime, Siegfried Marcus was widely considered the originator of the motorcar. Microfluidics Speeds Up Genetic Engineering

Microfluidics Speeds Up Genetic Engineering Microfluidics Speeds Up Genetic Engineering Genetic engineering is a little tricky, especially when it comes to transferring foreign DNA into delicate cells without destroying them. The current approach uses a process called electroporation, which exposes cells to a magnetic field. The magnetic field is adjusted until the ideal field strength is reached: the magnitude at which the pores in the cell membrane open just enough to let in the foreign DNA, and then close back up again without damaging the cell. It can take months, and even years, of painstaking experimentation to find the right field strength. This time-consuming and frustrating process may soon be dramatically shortened, thanks to a new microfluidic device developed by Cullen Buie, an associate professor of mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his research team. The device can quickly determine the sweet spot in the electric field: the range of electric potentials that will temporarily open up the pores in the cell membrane. So far results have been very promising. Were trying to reduce the amount of experimentation thats needed, says Buie. Our big vision for this device and future iterations is to be able to take a process that usually takes months or years, and complete it in a day or two. An artists rendition of DNA entering bacteria. Image: Nicolle Fuller / MIT How It Works Buie got the idea for the microfluidic device after discussions with several genetic engineers who were lamenting how electroporation takes so much time. The device consists of a channel created using a soft lithography process. The channel narrows in the middle. When an electric field is applied to the device, the channels geometry causes the field to exhibit a range of electric potentials, the highest occurring in the narrowest part of the channel. Cells that flow through the channel are subjected to the same range of electric potentials. A fluorescent marker, which lights up in the presence of the cells DNA, is added to the solution. When a cells pores are opened by a particular electric field, the markers enter the cell and lights up in response to the cells own genetic material. Researchers then mark the location of each fluorescent cell along the channel to identify the value of the electric field that triggers the opening of the membrane pores. Using one experiment, you can test a range of electric fields and get some information almost instantly, in terms of whether theres been something successful in opening pores, Buie says. So now, in your searching process, you dont need to run a bunch of different experiments and test different electric fields separately. You can do it in one go, and it literally lights up. In another test, the researchers applied an electric field to bacterial cells in the presence of DNA encoded for antibiotic resistance. The cells were then removed from the device and placed on a separate plate with antibiotics. Results showed that the cells were able to reproduceproof that the antibiotic-resistant DNA was successfully taken into the cells, without any cellular damage. This device allows genetic engineers to measure the minimum electric field that opens pores in an organism, and does so in less than one second, says Buie. Sometimes a breakthrough doesnt have to be complicated. Perhaps the most surprising aspect of this work is that nobody had tried it before, he adds. The concept for our device is rather straightforward; when we show it to most people in the field, they immediately get the idea and often wonder, Why didnt I think of that? Moving Forward Prior to this discovery, successful electroporation could take months or years. Now the potential exists to reduce it by at least an order of magnitude. It also boosts the probability of cell survival by identifying the minimum electric field needed to open pores in an organism. Being able to apply the minimum electric field makes it more likely that a majority of the cells will remain viable, says Buie. Roughly one percent of bacteria grown in the lab can be genetically reprogrammed using electroporation. Buie hopes his work will result in making more bacteria available for genetic manipulation for diverse applications including cancer treatment, antibiotics, and bio-based materials. We hope our research will have widespread fundamental and applied implications, he concludes. On the fundamental side, this work will allow microbiologists to determine how genetics influence microbial physiology. With respect to applications, the research and commercial communities will have a larger number of bacteria available for genetic manipulation. The direct result is that there will be a broader range of technical problems that can be solved using biological engineering. Mark Crawford is an independent writer.
